Hello everyone! I have already done and Allegiant Review, but I realized I left out some of the things that I wanted to talk about, so I am doing a part two. There are spoilers in this review! If you have not read it, come back after you have finished! The same things apply that I said in the first review. This post will be not be full of appreciation for this book, or very pleasant. That being said, I am not trying to be, and hope I do not come across and cruel and inconsiderate to Veronica Roth. As a writer myself, there are many authors I look up to, and she is one of them. I have heard that she has been receiving physical threats, and I think that is wrong. I don't care who you are, you don't have the right to threaten an author. Lastly, I had planned on doing a review for both Divergent and Insurgent. But, now that I have finished Allegiant, I don't know if I will be able to look at the characters the same way. I will of course still post my review if you want, just leave a comment telling me so. Now, let's jump into the review. I have decided the best way to approach this is to take it topic by topic.
Review:
In the last review, I said how in Allegiant, we really got to see who the characters truly were. That being said, not all of the differences that we saw in the characters felt real to me. I am going to start with Tobias. The Tobias we saw in Allegiant was not the same Tobias we saw in the previous books. He was no longer tough and confident. He was an emotional wreck. I don't know if Veronica intended for it to be that way, but of came off like he wasn't even the same person. I understand that after he realized he was not Divergent he was a little thrown off, but he just kind of went out of control. At least that is how I saw it. I don't think that the Four we knew in the first two books would react the way he actually did in Allegiant. Then, when he went with that other girl in the middle of the night, I was so mad. The Four we knew before would never do that! I am just relived that he told Tris about it. When he agreed to go with Nita I was upset because he was mad at Tris for keeping secrets from him. Then, he went in the middle of the night with some one he didn't even know. I thought it was very out of character. Didn't in Divergent, he say that he was suspicious of people. If he is, why is he trusting her? Once I really think about who Tobias is as a character, I really start to question him. He says that Tris is strong and that he values her opinion, but then he doesn't listen to it. I am not saying he has to obey whatever Tris says, but he should take what she says into consideration. This is horrible because I am really trying to still love Four as a character. And, I think he is a great character, but it is becoming harder to overlook some of the things he does. Also, I don't even really know what was going on with Peter. It seemed very out of character for him to want to take the memory serum. We didn't even think he had any guilt about what he had done until the end of the book. In Insurgent we saw that he just didn't want to be in anyone's debt. Then, in Allegiant he suddenly realizes he is a awful person. I don't think he deserved to start over. I think if he was really sorry for what he had done he would of fixed what he had done without the memory serum.
One of my biggest problem with this book was that there were so many unanswered questions. I felt like there were huge holes in the plot of this book. From what I remember, we did not find out what happened to Marcus. Also, I want to know why Tris is more divergent then other people. Why can she survive the death serum? I just feel like there were so many things she mentioned in the first two books, that didn't even mean anything in the rest of the series.
While I am on the topic of pointless things, I thought there were many unnecessary characters. I think that Nita was only there to cause conflict between Tris and Four. I think that she did not need to play a big part like she did. The same goes for Matthew. I feel like she should of concentrated more on characters we already knew like Christina, Uriah and Cara.
I have heard many people say that what was outside the fence was a let down. I completely agree. In one book chat I saw they said that they thought outside the fence it would be like what it is today. I think that would be so funny, but at the same time it would be really interesting. I think that would be so cool to see and I kind of wish that was actually how it happened. In the Edith Prior video it made what was outside the fence sound exciting and intriguing, and it wasn't. I was expecting so much from this book, and it just did not happen.
Another thing about the two P.O.V.s is that I think it would of worked better if she had narrated only from the P.O.V. of Tris. Then, Tobias could of taken over after she died. I think this would of made the book more interesting. I think that when Tobias told Tris about him and Nita, it would of been more shocking if the book had been told by Tris alone. I think this would of made the ending more surprising too. By narrating from both point of views, it left an opening for her death. I started to figure out that she would sacrifice herself when she thought that Caleb was sacrificing himself for the wrong reasons. I don't think that would of happened if the book was only from the P.O.V. of Tris.
If you do not know, I hate love triangles. This was one of the reasons that I really enjoy these books. I really was happy there was not a love triangle. I think that almost all YA fiction authors feel like there needs to be a love triangle. And half the time they aren't even necessary. At first I thought that Tobias, Tris and Nita would form a love triangle. And, I was really scared because that would of ruined so much for me. Almost as much as the death of Tris. Also, it would of been very out of character for Tobias to cheat on Tris.
Another thing that I did not like about the book was how the plot was so different from the other two books. I thought that Evelyn would be the main antagonist in Allegiant, but once they left the city we didn't really see that much of her. Also, I felt like the plot of this book did not really tie in with the other two. I have heard people complain because there was not as much action in this third book, but personally, I really liked that. I really liked how Veronica focused on the mental aspect of things, rather than having another book full of action. Don't get me wrong, I love a book that is full of action and is really fast paced. But, I did think that Allegiant needed to focus mainly on the characters.
One of the main things that I thought was really good was that Tobias and Tris switched places. Unlike in Insurgent, Tobias had made a big mistake this time. I think that it was good for them to see where the other person was coming from. I think that this ultimately made them stronger together. I just wanted them to get married and after all they had been through to be okay. I think that they deserved that. They had gone through so much together and I just wanted them to be happy. I don't even mean 100% happy, I don't want a book to end perfectly. I just mean they both could of lived! I thought that they were going to be done arguing like they had during most of Insurgent and Allegiant. I can never picture or think of what their wedding would be like, because there is not going to be a wedding. I understand that it was a war, and people die. But why did it have to be Tris?
Lastly, I think that if Tris were a real person, she would not of sacrificed herself. Personally, I don't think that she really loved Caleb. I think she thought that she needed to because he was her brother, but I don't feel like she truly did. But, that could just be me. I think that she truly loved Tobias, not Caleb. She said that they were not ever really close before she went to Dauntless. And after he betrayed her, he ruined everything.
In conclusion, I just think that there are so many better ways for it to end. I do still love the books, and I always will. They are just different to me now. And, honestly, I don't like them as much as before. What did you think of Allegiant? Leave a comment or send me an e-mail. I always love to see what you think. Thanks!
