Hi everyone! I will be reviewing Maximum Ride by James Patterson. I really love this series and have read is multiple times. But, with that being said, I still have both good and bad thing to say. First, I will start off by saying that even with its flaws, I think that it is a series worth your time. I know I have really enjoyed reading it.(I know this review is long, but please bear with me and read it all. Thanks!)
There are spoilers in this review!
It is basically about six genetically enhanced children who have wings. In the beginning of the series The Flock (Max, Fang, Nudge, Iggy, Gazzy, and Angel, The kids with wings) have escaped from a science lab called The School and are living on their own. But, they are found by other genetically altered humans called Erasers. The first few books are about the Flock fighting Erasers and The School who is forming the By-Half plan. This gets rid of half the Earth's population. Also, it is Max's job to save the world and the flock starts dealing with clones. But, starting with the fourth book they start fighting against global warming. Max and Fang also start to acknowledge their feeling for one another. They also have to save Max's mom. Starting in book five Max and Fang are officially together. Then, another character, Dylan, who also has wings, is introduced. Dylan starts to live with the flock and they start dealing with the Doomsday Group. After Fang leaves the flock he forms his own gang. Even though they have separated, Max and The Flock, and Fang's Gang must work together to stop the Doomsday Group. At the end of it all Fang still decides to go with his new gang, instead of going back with the flock. Max now starts to have feelings for Dylan. The flock decides to start going to regular school. Once things start going bad with Fang's gang, he decides to go back to Max. When Fang gets back she hugs him even though Dylan is standing there. Dylan gets mad and goes and destroys an entire town. Then Jeb, who is a scientist who worked at The School, comes to kill Fang. Dylan comes back and tries to kill Fang himself, but can't do it because he knows it will hurt Max. Max's mom then comes to take the flock to paradise where they will live in peace for the rest of their lives. Max and Fang do end up together. But, the apocalypse comes and Max cannot save the world.
Review
Now, for my review, for the first three books, I really have no complains. I love all the action and how they are still fighting The School and erasers, instead of global warming. Also, I like that the flocks relationship is simple. Minus the fact that Fang kisses Max. But Angel is still sweet, Nudge is not worried about being different, and Fang is still in the flock. I also am mad that Fang left the flock in Fang. I don't mind when he leaves because Max brings Ari when they escape from the school. Mainly because then he actually had a good reason to leave. But when he leaves because he thinks he is putting Max in danger, I feel like James Patterson was just trying to create conflict that shouldn't have been there. I also think it was too much when he created his own gang, especially when he had Maya be a part of it. I felt like Fang was replacing Max because he missed her so much and didn't want to leave her. So, I don't think he should of left in the first place, even though he thought it would protect Max. Next, I would like to address Dylan. I know people who love Dylan, and I also know people who despise him. Personally, I can't stand Dylan. But, I do think it was smart of James Patterson to add him to the series, I think it was a good plot twist. I also think that the fact that Nudge gets self-conscience about her wings is a good problem that was added to the series. I think that it was time that someone really questioned if they actually were okay with having wings.
I would now like to talk about Angel. She was great being Max's little girl in the first books, but then, she started to get power hungry and it all went bad from there. She started to kind of act okay after a while, but then she went back to wanting to lead the flock. I think that it would be fine if she just had gone crazy for a little bit, but then James Patterson continually brought it up. Also, Angel being the voice, What?!?! I still don't know why he made it that way. I think it was overkill because he let Angel be able to read minds, he could not of picked a worse character to be the voice! But, that being said, I must say, I didn't see it coming. Mainly because I honestly did not think he would choose someone like her or someone from the flock.
I would also like to talk about Ari. I think that after he came back to life once, after Max killed him, was perfectly okay.(I actually liked that he came back to life once, because I don't think readers were expecting it.)This is only because James Patterson actually made it sound reasonable. But, when Ari continually came back to life, even though the last time was a clone, it all became too much, and didn't seem likely at all.
Lastly, I will tell you my opinion about the ending, which, like the rest of the series I have good, and bad things to say about. First, I would like to say how unbelievably happy I am that Max ended up with Fang. If she had ended up with Dylan, I don't know what I would of done. All I know is that it would of ruined a lot for me. Also, I think in the end Dylan proved that he was never Max's "perfect other half", I think Max always loved Fang. And, that Fang is the "perfect other half" to Max. Moving on, I think that Max not being able to save the world really let the readers down. Mainly because we had spent all this time with this series, hoping that max would succeed in the end, but she failed. Even if she couldn't of saved the entire world, she could of maybe saved the majority. I kind of wish that The School had really been the ones who would end the world, because I felt that James Patterson left The School behind after the third book. I think this would of wrapped thing up, whereas I feel once the flock go involved with global warming, The School fell off the face of the Earth. Now, I can't express how happy I am that James Patterson Made Max and Fang almost die at the end of Nevermore. I was on the edge of my seat and I really thought it was possible that it might be the end of Maximum Ride and Fang.
I have heard that James Patterson used ghostwriters for the series, and only wrote the first three books. I do not know if this is true, but, if it is, it kind of ruins the series for me. Also, I would love for James Patterson to write another book. I felt like even though he did wrap up a lot of the series he still left some loose ends. Like, how and if Angel, Max, Fang and Dylan find the caves. And, did everyone make it to the caves? I know that he said this would be the last book, but I would be overjoyed if he continued the series. Finally for my review, I would like to thank James Patterson. Maybe he didn't write all the books, but he did create a wonderful story and amazing characters. It might seem like a have more bad than good to say about the series, but I do love it, and Maximum Ride will always be one of my favorites.
Leave comments on what you thought of the series, if he should continue the series, and what books you think I should read or give reviews on. Also, who do you think should of ended up with Max? Hope you enjoyed this review. Thanks!
