Hello everyone! Today I will be reviewing Allegiant by Veronica Roth. Let me start by saying, there are spoilers in this review. If you have not read Divergent, Insurgent, or Allegiant, leave and come back AFTER you have finished the book!
There are a few things that I want to say before I start with the review. First, Allegiant really let me down. (I spent most of my day in this book. I went to buy it as soon as the bookstore opened on the 22nd, and finished late that night.) So, this post will be not be full of appreciation for this book, or very pleasant. That being said, I am not trying to be, and hope I do not come across and cruel and inconsiderate to Veronica Roth. As a writer myself, there are many authors I look up to, and she is one of them. I have heard that she has been receiving physical threats, and I think that is wrong. I don't care who you are, you don't have the right to threaten an author. Lastly, I had planned on doing a review for both Divergentand Insurgent. But, now that I have finished Allegiant, I don't know if I will be able to look at the characters the same way. I will of course still post my review if you want, just leave a comment telling me so. Now, let's jump into the review. I have decided the best way to approach this is to take it topic by topic.
Review:
I am going to start off with my initial reaction. Let me just say that I do not cry much when it comes to books, I honestly don't remember the last book before this that I cried. I will tear up, and be very sad, but I will not full out cry. This book, though, I sobbed for more time than I would like to admit. I just couldn't help it. I would say I started to cry about chapter 45, when I started to realize she would probably sacrifice herself. Then, it went on and off until way after I had finished the book. Besides that I was just devastated. Now after I have finished, and the initial sadness had passed, I am kind of mad. I saw a pin on Pinterest that had to do with Allegiant, and the caption expressed everything I felt after reading this book. It basically said,"It was rude to kill Tris. Tris was never just a character to me, she was a part of me that I will never get back. I looked up to her and followed her advice. Now she has been defeated and I have too. Veronica did not think of the affect this would have on her readers. I can never reread this series." I am sure she thought of the affect it would have, but she clearly ignored that thought. I will never reread the series the same way, and I will not be able to watch the movie without looking at the characters differently. I will most likely be in the theaters sobbing. So, that should be interesting.
One of the main reasons I am mad that Tris died is because after all she had been through, she still lost, and was defeated. I think Eric and Jeanine won because they wanted her dead, and now she is dead. I think Evelyn won because she wanted Tobias all to herself. Now that Tris is gone, she has that. I reread the series multiple times before Allegiantcame out and spent a lot of time in this trilogy. I feel as though we deserved a better ending.
Now, for something positive, let's talk about the two P.O.V.s. I think that Veronica did a pretty great job narrating from both perspectives. If I had to choose, I would definitely choose having only Tris as the narrator. This is because a lot of time I would forget who's perspective I was reading from, which led to some confusion. But, that could just be me.
Another positive for me was the character development in this book. I think that we really got to see who some of the character really were. For example, we got to see that Tobias really did have some insecurities that we couldn't see in the first two books. Also, we got to see that Peter was sorry for what he had done, and wanted to change it.
Now, let's talk about Caleb. I really wanted to see him redeem himself after betraying Tris in the previous book. But, no. I see him as a coward. This is because if he really was brave, felt guilty for what he had done, and loved Tris, he would not of let her go to her death. He had to know that she would most likely not come back, and he still let it happen. I think he is a coward because of that. He was one of my favorite characters and I thought there must of been a logical explanation for what he did to Tris in Insurgent, but he really was just a weak person. At least, that is how I view him now.
It has been a while since Allegiant came out, and I have recently reread it. I have found that it was easier to accept what happened. That being said, it did not hurt any less. I am still extremely sad and upset, but it did get easier. I hope you enjoyed this review. If you have any more questions about what I thought of the book, leave a comment or e-mail me. Also, what are your thoughts? I would be happy to see them! Thanks!
